The Chelsea Tractor Scotch Eggs

Background

A Scotch egg is a traditional British dish/snack that consists of a hard-boiled or soft-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried, baked or Air Fried until crispy. It's often served cold and can be found in pubs, picnics, and as part of traditional British cuisine. The combination of the savory sausage, the crispy breadcrumb coating, and the egg inside makes it a popular snack or appetizer. with a delicate Combination of Textures and Flavours.

The Scotch egg, is believed to have originated in England. One of the earliest records of the Scotch egg comes from the London department store Fortnum & Mason, which claims to have invented it in 1738 as a portable, snackable meal for travellers.

A Scotch Eggs consists of:

  • A soft boiled egg: Eggs are boiled to the desired level of doneness, typically somewhere between runny, soft-boiled and hard-boiled.
  • Wrapped in Sausage Meat: Once boiled and peeled, the eggs are wrapped in a layer of seasoned sausage meat.
  • Coated in Breadcrumbs: The sausage-wrapped eggs are then coated in breadcrumbs.
  • Cook (Fried, Air Fried): Traditionally the Scotch Eggs are deep-fried until golden brown and crispy, however we Air Fry our scotch eggs which gives a much more rounded flavour makes them Crispy, healthier and Taste better.

Our Breadcrumbs come from the local Bakery, this offers a huge amount of depth in flavour because of all the different types of bread that's  being sliced. Fresh every day!

About me (Why The Chelsea Tractor?)

Where I grew up in Devon UK:

Growing up in Devon UK I had very limited experience of the world just a village and farming mentality, surrounded by beautiful countryside, rivers, hay bales and tractors of course, the sound of lawns cutting in the mornings were drowned out by 5 ton Tractors lifting hey bails and farmers hailing eachother in the lanes. To be honest apart from hearing them and meeting them in the narrow lanes I didn’t get a chance to drive a tractor, however I always wanted to!

Coming from the seaside and country towns of Devon, we used to meet Farming Tractors in the narrow lanes all the time, during the holiday seasons there were a lot of wealthy tourists visiting from London in their  prestigious Range Rovers, due to the fact they were the size of a tank and extremely wide for these lanes we used to call them Chelsea Tractors. Ironically, I did end up owning one, When I sold my (10 year old) Range Rover Vogue to fund a business it was a simple choice that this would be the name I established to form my new found venture.

Couple more Nicknames I can remember:

The Suburban Rhino: Rugged enough to tackle the jungle of your kid's school pickup line but still stylish enough to park outside the country club.

The High-Class Hiker: For those who love the great outdoors, as long as they don’t have to get out of the car.

One of my favourite snacks (ploughman’s) growing up was Scotch Eggs, whenever I fly back to the UK my first stop is an M&S service station to pick up a variety of Scotch Eggs. My heaven driving on the M4 to Devon, listening to English Radio, Breadcrumbs everywhere, make sure you have a portable vacuum cleaner at the other end to clean up the mess.

When my Nan passed away a few years ago (96 years old) she left me her handwritten recipe book with over 70 years of recipes, As she lived through 2 world wars, obviously some were a little bland due to the times, however the Concepts and Traditional approach encouraged me to continue her legacy.

I love living in Australia, this business allows me to bring some of the joy I miss from my British home.
